Higbee Family

Thanks to the excellent research of William Emerson Babcock and Clinton David Higby, we can trace the Higbee/Higbie/Higby (originally Hygebed) family back to about 1450.  This post details that family line. 

1. EMILY HIGBEE

  • born 2 Mar/Nov 1819 in either Crawford County, Ohio, or Ontario County, New York
  • parents: James Higbee, Jr. and Mary Finton/Fenton
  • married Garrett van Vranken on 9 Jan 1842 in Berrien County, Michigan
  • nine children:

  • born 7 Mar 1780 in Orange County, New York (perhaps Chester, Orange, New York)
  • parents: James Higbee, Sr. and Mary Jackson
  • married 1801/3 to Mary Finton/Fenton in New York, probably in Ontario County
  • twelve children:

3. MARY FINTON/FENTON

  • born 7 Mar 1782 in Florida, Orange, New York
  • parents: Joseph Finton/Fenton and Margaret Sweagles
  • died 20 Mar 1844 in Millburg, Berrien, Michigan; buried Millburg Cemetery in same.



4. JAMES HIGBEE, SR.

  • born about 1759 in Jamaica, Queens, Long Island, New York
  • parents: Samuel Higbie and Dorcas Gildersleeve
  • married Mary Jackson about 1777 in Orange County, New York
  • seven children, all probably born in Orange County, New York
    • Isaac, born 6 Sept 1778

    • Abel, born 1784
    • Nehemiah, born 1787 and married Eleanor Finton/Fenton
    • Martha, born 22 Mar 1791
    • Susannah, born 28 Aug 1793
  • served in the New York state militia during the American Revolution- Capt. Sayer's company, Col. John Hawthorn's regiment- and was made a sergeant; also served alongside his father-in-law Alexander Jackson
  • died about 1808 in Orange County, New York

5. MARY JACKSON

  • born 18 Sept 1753 in Florida, Orange, New York
  • parents: Alexander Jackson and Martha Drake
  • died 21 Aug 1823


6. JOSEPH FINTON/FENTON

  • born 1760-1 in Phillips Patent, Dutchess, New York (now Putnam County, New York)
  • parents: William Finton and Mary _?_
    • probably both born in Ireland, ca. 1730 and 1736 respectively.  Family legend says that William Finton lived to be 110.
  • married Margaret Sweagles about 1781 in New York; also married Thankful (Gillett?)  at unknown date (but probably after Margaret's death in 1822)
  • ten children, all with Margaret, as far as I know

  • enlisted June 1778 at Allentown, Pennsylvania and served until Jan 1781; he served under Capt. Craig with the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment commanded by Col. Craig, in General Anthony Wayne's army.  He was involved in action at Stoney Point in 1779, defended West Point, fought at Bargain Point, and witnessed the revolt in Wayne's army.
  • died 23 Oct 1851 in Barrington, Yates, New York; originally buried in family plot in Barrington, but the graves were moved to Lakeview Cemetery in Yates County, New York in 1925

7. MARGARET SWEAGLES

  • born about 1763 in Phillips Patent, Dutchess, New York (now Putnam County, New York)
  • parents unknown, though family history says that her family may have been German or Dutch
  • died about 1822 in Barrington, Yates, New York; originally buried in family plot in Barrington, but the graves were moved to Lakeview Cemetery in Yates County, New York in 1925



8. SAMUEL HIGBIE

  • born about 1737 in Jamaica, Queens, New York
  • parents: Samuel A. Higbie and maybe Jane Carpenter
  • married Dorcas Gildersleeve 16 Mar 1759 in Hempstead, Suffolk, New York
  • only child known is James (see above)
  • death date unknown; burial place unknown


10. ALEXANDER JACKSON

  • born 12 Jun 1728/9, some sources say in New York and others say Ireland
  • father was probably James Jackson, mother unknown
  • married Martha Drake at unknown date
  • only child known is Mary (see above)
  • served in Orange County, New York militia in Col. John Hawthorn's regiment alongside his son-in-law James Higbee
  • died 14 Mar 1818 in Florida, Orange, New York; burial unknown

11. MARTHA DRAKE

  • born 15 April 1732 in Goshen, Orange, New York
  • parents: John Drake and Martha Oldfield
    • some sources say her mother was Magdalena Brower, but this does not seem to be the case
  • died 10 Aug 1819 in Florida, Orange, New York; burial unknown



16. SAMUEL A. HIGBIE

  • born about 1708 in Jamaica, Queens, New York
  • father was Samuel Higby and mother was _?_ Ludlam, daughter of William Ludlam
  • married Jane Carpenter, daughter of John Carpenter at unknown date; also married another woman whose name is unknown before 1737
  • seven children, I believe all with Jane Carpenter
    • Samuel (see above)

    • Phebe, born 1742

    • Aaron, born 19 Oct 1749

  • born 1667 and baptized 12 Mar 1671/2 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut
  • parents: Edward Higby and Lydia _?_
  • married the daughter of William Ludlam (name unknown) in Jamaica, Queens, New York
  • at least four children
    • Samuel A. (see above)

  • died in 1752 in Jamaica, Queens, New York; burial unknown


64. EDWARD HIGBY

  • baptized 2 Feb 1615/6 in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, England
  • parents: John Higby and possibly Ursula Blacknote?
  • emigrated to New London, New London, Connecticut between 1640-1646
  • married Jedidah Skidmore about 1647, then Lydia _?_ between 1660 and 1662
  • ten children, the first five with Jedidah and the last five with Lydia.  The first three were born in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut, the next two in Huntington, Fairfield, Connecticut, the next three in Jamaica, Queens, New York, and the last two in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut

  2. Looking back into my family tree.....my tree joins in at 64. Edward Higby. The farthest back I can find is the same as what you have listed.
